Electronic logging devices (ELDs) are intended to create a safer work environment for drivers of commercial motor vehicles, and make it easier and faster to accurately track, manage, and share data on driving and off-duty time.

FMCSA removes two ELDs from the Registered Devices List

On August 15, 2024, FMCSA removed BLUE STAR ELD and RELIABLE ELD devices from the list of registered ELDs due to the companies’ failure to meet the minimum requirements. The period for motor carriers to use paper logs while updating to a new ELD has ended as of October 14, 2024. Read more

Roads Safer

FMCSA is committed to providing manufacturers, carriers, and drivers with the information they need to stay compliant with the ELD rule.

To implement the ELD rule, FMCSA relies on our partnerships to ensure a smooth transition.

FMCSA…

  • Ensures that drivers of commercial motor vehicles get the rest they need to drive safer by publishing, educating on, and enforcing the ELD rule.
  • Provides methods for testing to assist manufacturers in creating compliant ELDs.
  • Trains enforcement personnel on requesting HOS data from ELDs and reviewing electronic driver logs for HOS violations.
  • Works with manufacturers to rectify ELDs found not meeting the minimum requirements or, when necessary, removes non-compliant devices from the list of self-certified ELDs.

ELD providers…

  • Certify that their devices meet the specifications in the ELD rule in order for their devices to appear on the FMCSA list of self-certified ELDs.
  • Maintain the accuracy of their device registration, informing FMCSA of any major changes or enhancements.
  • Ensure the security of their devices and work with carriers to quickly resolve any technical malfunctions or issues.

Motor Carriers/Drivers…

  • Use the list of self-certified ELDs to decide which ELD is right for their business needs.
  • Train drivers on using ELDs to track and share records of duty status.
  • Make sure ELDs are functioning properly in all non-exempt vehicles.

Enforcing Hours of Service

FMCSA is tracking the impact ELDs are having on industry compliance with hours-of-service regulations. As you can see in the graph, hours-of-service violations have fallen sharply since the ELD rollout. These critical regulations ensure that CMV drivers get the breaks they need, increasing the safety of everyone on the road.

FMCSA estimates that ELDs will result in:

  • 1,844 crashes avoided annually
  • 562 fewer injuries per year
  • 26 lives saved each year

ELDs are an important tool to help the motor carrier industry comply with critical hours-of-service regulations that improve safety on our Nation’s roads by making sure drivers get the breaks they need.
